This past weekend marked a monumental chapter in UCT Rugby Club history as inspirational flanker and captain Sipho Dyonase laced up his boots to pull on the famous blue and white jersey for the 100th time.
Reaching a century of caps for the Ikey Tigers is a rare and prestigious feat, testament not only to Dyonase’s exceptional durability and work ethic on the field, but also to his relentless commitment to the club over the years.
A Journey Built on Grit and Purpose
Dyonase’s path to 100 caps is built on relentless dedication. After attending Wynberg Boys’ High School, he made his way to the Green Mile. For Sipho, rugby was always about joining something bigger than himself—a platform to lead, unite, and inspire.
From his early days bursting onto the varsity scene as a dynamic, hard-tackling loose forward to taking up the captain’s armband, Dyonase has embodied the true spirit of a student-athlete. Off the field, he earned his degree in Psychology and Social Work, demonstrating the discipline required to balance top-tier sports with rigorous academic demands.
“I want to be someone who makes an impact in the community I come from. For me, that is also my biggest thing—to show people that you don’t have to be a victim of your circumstances.”
— Sipho Dyonase
Leading from the Front
Whether putting in bone-crunching tackles, driving over the whitewash, or steering the team through high-pressure Varsity Cup and Super League A clashes, Dyonase has consistently been the heartbeat of the squad. His leadership guided the Ikeys through key triumphs, earning the respect of teammates, opponents, and supporters across the country.
Hitting 100 matches isn’t just a personal victory; it’s a celebration for his family, his community, and everyone who has supported him along the way.
Thank You, Sipho!
On behalf of the players, coaching staff, committee, and the entire Ikey Tigers family: Congratulations, Sipho! Thank you for 100 matches of uncompromising passion, leadership, and pride on the Green Mile.
Here’s to many more victories ahead!
