June 2026

The 2026 FNB Varsity Cup campaign will go down as one of the most unique, emotional
rollercoaster seasons in UCT Rugby history. While our senior FNB Ikey Tigers experienced a
heartbreaking conclusion to their campaign, failing to secure a semi-final spot, the future of the
club has never burned brighter. In a historic first, the FNB UCT Young Guns rose above the rest
to lift their maiden U20 Varsity Cup trophy!
Here is our reflection on a season that tested our depth, proved our resilience, and crowned a
new generation of champions.

Senior Team: Heartbreak on the Road to the Play-offs

Entering the 2026 season with high expectations and fierce determination under the leadership
of captain Enos Ndiao, the senior Ikey Tigers set out to make the Green Mile a fortress. There
were moments of sheer brilliant, high-tempo rugby—most notably the staggering 87–28
demolition of UJ on home turf.
However, inconsistency and costly slip-ups on the road ultimately took their toll in a relentlessly
competitive field. Despite fighting to the bitter end, the First XV fell agonizingly short of the top
four, missing out on the semi-finals.
While it wasn’t the fairy-tale finish the senior squad worked so tirelessly for, the grit shown by
this group has laid a vital foundation. The lessons learned in the trenches this year will
undoubtedly fuel the fire for a massive comeback campaign next season.

Young Guns: A Historic Maiden Title!

While the senior result left a sting, our Under-20 Young Guns ensured that 2026 will forever be
etched in gold in the UCT history books. For the first time since the tournament’s inception in
2012, UCT are the Varsity Cup Young Guns Champions!
Led by coach Joel Carew and captained fiercely by Tyrone Gombe, the Cubs put together a
breathtaking campaign. After finishing top of Group B with a series of gritty performances, they
truly turned on the magic when the pressure mounted.

  • The Semi-Final: They treated the home crowd to a spectacular 50–31 win over the UJ
Young Guns on the Green Mile.
  • The Final: Travelling to Pretoria, the boys played with absolute freedom, tactical brilliance,
and immense courage to overpower the University of Free State Young Guns 42–29 in an
    unforgettable final.

The Future is Braver, The Pipeline is Strong

At UCT, we pride ourselves on a holistic rugby ecosystem where the junior ranks feed the senior
team. Seeing the Young Guns lift that trophy isn’t just a victory for this specific U20 squad—it’s a
massive statement about the sustainable future of the entire Ikey Tigers club.

To the players, the coaching staff, and the unparalleled UCT community who braved the wind to
back the badge on the Green Mile: thank you.
We close the chapter on Varsity Cup 2026 with immense pride. The senior boys will rebuild, the
juniors have shown us the way, and together, we continue to be BRAVER.
