Reliving the Mark Jordaan Memorial Rivalry
The Mark Jordaan Memorial celebrates the great rivalry between UCT and False Bay RFC, and the memory of the late Mark Jordaan who played for both the clubs. The memorial was established in 1989, after the tragic death of Jordaan in 1987.
He was on old SACS boy who went on to study at UCT and played for the Ikey Tigers. After graduating from UCT, Jordaan left the Ikeys to play for False Bay and played in the first team until 1987. After retiring from competitive rugby, he and some friends established the first “Young Crocks” social team; playing with good mates until his untimely death. Many who knew him will remember his wonderful humanity and sense of humour in never taking anything too seriously.
Since its inception 28 years ago, there have been many players who have played for both clubs over the years. This day filled by entertaining rugby brings together old boys and reignite old friendships.
“I think it’s a really special trophy that means a lot to both sides and me, I have won it a couple of times for both UCT and False Bay. It’s important to honour Mark’s legacy and I think both sides do so when they run out! In my opinion the trophy is crucial for both sides as it gives bragging rights to the victors. The ark Jordaan trophy will always be battled for hard and I hope we do him and his family proud when doing so,” said Chetty 2011 Varsity Cup champion with the Ikeys and currently False Bay player.
