There is no greater testament to the strength of the UCT Rugby pathway than seeing our
homegrown talent recognized on the international stage. The UCT RFC community is bursting
with immense pride following the call-ups of two of our standout Ikey Tigers, Jack Benade and
Olunje Mehlomakulu, to the Junior Springbok squad for the 2026 international season!
Both players have earned their spots through relentless work ethic, outstanding tactical skill, and
stellar performances in the Ikeys jersey.
Jack Benade: The Speedster Lighting Up the Wing
Utility back and lethal winger Jack Benade has been in sublime form, making his inclusion in the
national U20 setup an absolute no-brainer. Known for his acceleration and sharp finishing
abilities, Jack has already made a massive statement in the green and gold this season.
He announced himself to the international stage in spectacular fashion earlier this year, dotting
down for a magnificent hat-trick of tries against Argentina in Gqeberha, before following it up
with crucial tries against heavyweights like Australia and Georgia. His ability to find the try line
under immense pressure has made him an invaluable asset to the Junior Bok backline.
Olunje Mehlomakulu: Hard-Hitting Midfield Powerhouse
Joining Benade in the national setup is the powerhouse midfielder, Olunje Mehlomakulu. Brought
into the highly competitive Junior Springbok squad to inject raw power and stability into the
midfield, Olunje’s rise has been nothing short of exceptional.
A player who thrives in the physical battles, Olunje’s rock-solid defensive reads and explosive
ball-carrying lines have been turning heads all season. Earning his opportunities in the starting
lineup against international touring sides like Chile, he has proven that he belongs at the absolute
pinnacle of junior world rugby.
Continuing the Ikey Tiger Legacy
For decades, UCT has been a proud breeding ground for future international rugby stars. The
selection of Jack and Olunje further reinforces the club’s standard of excellence and serves as a
massive inspiration for every young player pulling on an Ikeys jersey on the Green Mile.
