Twenty years ago, the UCT Rugby Club lost one of its true stalwarts. Former first XV player Immanuel “Mackie” McKenzie tragically passed away during a match while representing Tygerberg RFC, the very club he had joined UCT from prior to his standout 2004 and 2005 seasons in the blue and white stripes.

Mackie left an indelible mark on everyone who crossed his path. A key member of the historic 2004 intervarsity squad that defeated Maties in Stellenbosch, he was remembered by former UCT rugby director Spencer King as a “gentle giant” with a perpetual smile and an open, charming personality that instantly drew people to him. On the pitch, Mackie was a formidable presence, playing with a controlled aggression and uncompromising hardness that elevated every pack of forwards around him. While carrying off the field a warmth and exuberance for life that made him deeply cherished by players, coaches, administrators, and supporters alike.
That enduring bond between UCT and Tygerberg RFC lives on today. On August 19th, both clubs took to the field once again to compete for the annual Tiger Cup, played every year in Mackie’s honour.
While the Ikey Tigers narrowly missed out on the trophy in a hard-fought 20–19 defeat, the spirit of the match embodied everything Mackie stood for: fierce competition, respect, and camaraderie. Win or lose, it remains an immense privilege for our players and staff to be a part of such a meaningful occasion, keeping the memory of a true friend, player, and gentleman alive on the pitch where he gave so much.
Rest in peace, Mackie. Forever an Ikey.
