The annual Ikey Tigers Black Tie dinner was held at Kelvin Grove on Friday 10th of June with a capacity 300 guests who enjoyed a fantastic evening of laughs, re-unions and entertaining speeches.
The new and improved Ikey Tigers Supporters Club hosted the event and was launched on the evening by chair John le Roux. The Supporters Club would like to welcome over 50 new members who joined right there on the night!
The event featured a guest panel quizzed by former Ikeys prop Stephen Knoop who spent many seasons in Ireland playing for Connacht and Leinster. On stage with him were a host of former internationals Freddie McLennan, Roger Young, Dion O’Cuinneagain as well as Alan Quinlan, an Ireland and Muster stalwart who ended his career in 2011 and now commentates for Sky. The topics ranged from predicting an upset by Ireland, via the importance of supporting ones club, to many hilarious and outrageous tales of rugby lives lived deeply.
Roger Young remembers it always being tough playing in South Africa. In a match played against Transvaal in the late 60s the ref indicated a scrum. Roger had missed the hand gesture and as the scrum-half approached the ref to inquire who’s ball it was. The referee promptly responded: “Ours.”
A detailed report and more photos will follow.
