The young Ikeys went down to a powerful NWU Pukke team on Monday by 14:50 and will now compete in the USSA plate round.
The FNB UCT first half try came through center Brendan Rogers when the Pukke powered to a 24:7 lead at the half.
The final five pointer for the Cape Town student was scored by veteran Richard Steward who injected some spark from full back.
The Ikeys now play against FNB NMMU on Wednesday at 11am.
Varsity Cup champions FNB UP-Tuks beat FNB Wits handsomely 66-12 in their first game and the beaten Varsity Cup finalists, FNB Maties, beat FNB NMMU 27-8 to advance to the next round of the competition.
FNB UJ also came out on top in a tense match against FNB UFS-Shimlas 17-15.
