The UCT 1st XV continued their very impressive run of form in the Western Province Super A-League with a well-deserved victory over Gold Cup finalists Durbell.
After their previous clean sweeps in the opening two rounds of the competition UCT travelled to Durbanville brimming with confidence. Unfortunately that clean sweep record was to be broken as the UCT U20B side lost to Durbell’s U20B side, 43-26.
The UCT 3rd XV were outscored by three tries to two in a tough 20-10 loss against Durbell’s 3rd XV.
The UCT women’s side, the Swifts, played out a 25-25 draw against Eerste River as they continue to impress in their debut season.
The UCT U20A side, the cubs, continued their unbeaten streak in the league with another strong performance against Durbell to walk away 40-26 victors, scoring 6 tries in the process.
The 2nd XV clash could not have been tighter and definitely set the tone for what was to come in the clash of the day later on. UCT showed true grit and determination to hold onto a narrow 7 point lead to win the match 12-5.
In the final matchup of the day the UCT 1st XV, the Ikey Tigers, really made a statement about their title contention with a phenomenal 34-28 victory over the best non-university side in the province in 2018.
They continued their brand of running rugby that has worked so well for them thus far in the competition scoring 5 tries in the process to earn themselves a well-deserved bonus point victory.
This fantastic result sees UCT retain their spot at the top of the log tied up with their rivals False Bay with a perfect 15 points from the opening three matches.
Next UCT host their first match on the Green Mile against Paarl and they’ll be looking to bring this hot run of form with them in front of their home crowd.
There will be a full day of matches at the mile opening with the UCT Swifts up against Macassar at 11:30. Followed by The Cubs v Paarl U20A at 13:20.
The Bears v Paarl 3rd XV kicks off at 13:30, with the Eagles taking on Paarl 2nd XV at 14:40. The final match of the day has the Ikey Tigers up against Paarl 1st XV. The Ikeys Pub and Grind will be open all day serving food and refreshments as running rugby returns to the Green Mile.
