The final of the 2008 Varsity Cup between the Ikey Tigers and Maties will be
played on Monday 7th April at 6.45pm in the Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch.
This was confirmed today by the VC management and there were unfortunately no alternatives, as UCT does not have the capacity to host the size crowd that is expected, as well as facilities to enable evening TV coverage. Why not Newlands? The WP RFU was ready and keen to host the match, but the ruling was that it should be played on a campus, as it is a student competition.
The Ikey Tigers and Maties proved their big match temperament, securing their places in the final of the
2008 FNB Varsity Cup in two nailbiting semis, that could not have been topped for drama and excitement.
It is always a tight affair between the old rivals, the last time the teams met was two weeks ago in George, where Ikeys came out tops, beating the Stellenbosch students 38-32, the previous time before that, was the final league match of September 2007 when Maties won what was yet another humdinger in the very last minute 42:40 (read here).
With the very best of SA’s universities competing, who would have thought that it would be the traditional Cape rivals clashing on such a grand stage when the tournament kicked off just over 6 weeks ago? This first ever VC final promises to be an absolute cracker and it is bound to revive the glory days of the great Intervarsities of the 60s and 70s.
It is the UCT RFC’s 125th aniversary, so no better time to make history. The Ikey Tigers are 80 minutes away
from cup glory and it is up to you to make it a home game for the team that has dominated the competition and excited spectators and worried the opposition with their spirit and trademark running rugby. Given the fanatical blue and white crowds at recent Intervarsities this should be a done deal – let’s hear that Uuuuu and make the Tigers roar out in Stellenbosch!
The sponsors and organisers promise to end this great competition with a huge spectacle, so come early and dont miss it!
Proceedings kick off in the afternoon and at 5pm, the
plate winning UCT Colts will be playing in the main curtain raiser
against Steinhoff Dagbreek, the official Steinhoff Koshuis champions for 2008.
