Snoopy with his Leinster Team mates, celebrating Ollie le Roux at the all Ireland Hot Dog Eating competition.
Here is a man who needs no introduction – the Big Dog! Stephen Snoopy Knoop! The famous varsity tighthead prop who had a strict diet of beer and boerewors after 12 at night till sun rise, with his trusted and preferred supplier of the latter being the aptly called “Boerewors Lady” ouside the Green Man, now known as Tin Roof.
Snoopy is a club legend and also a member fo the famous 2004 Intervarsity campions. He went on to conquer Ireland, playing Heineken Cup against the world’s best.
Name / Nickname:
Stephen “Snoopy” Knoop
Snoopy in the Blue and White of 2003, with Dave Rickets, Fish Hove and Paul Banger
Played at varsity when, what positions and for what teams:
I played at UCT from 1999 to 2004. I played tight head for all my years and was the kicker for the Devils (a mixed bunch of characters that won the Championship in Zimbabwe- coached by the legendary Gus Enderstein) I played in some great teams, with great mates and coaches. I played in the unbeaten UCT U20 in 2000 coached by the famous Brendan Fogarty and the Silver Fox – Jeremy De Kock. The original Eagles of 2002 coached by John Le Roux , Derek Van Der Berg and Holla and the Intervarsity team of 2004 which had the best management team ever assembled with John, Derek, Holla, Phil Kilroe and Dobbo. And yes, captained by you know who, Dave Ricketts!
Where are you now and what are you doing :
I’ve been living in Ireland for 5 years and have just recently got engaged. I played rugby for Connacht for 3 years (with fellow UCT prop Bret Wilkinson) and am currently living in Dublin, playing rugby for Leinster and trying to get back into the team.
Best thing about UCT rugby:
Life long friendships, amazing coaches, management and staff. The pub, fines meetings, tours, Intervarsity and some of the most special characters you ll ever meet.
Best varsity rugby memory:
My greatest rugby memory is winning Intervarsity and all the Ikeys supporters jumping the fences and flooding the field for the celebrations. It was a special day for everyone.
Any guys you are still in touch with:
I am regularly in touch with my old UCT team mates and it is always great to see them although its not as regularly as I like.
Do you follow the UCT Ikey Tigers and the Club:
My youngest brother Snoopy plays at the club for the Eagles and so am I regularly updated with UCT results and followed the Varsity Cup closely from afar last year.
People I miss :
Immanuel McKenzie, he was a team mate, friend and great character who I will truly miss. His legend will live on and am extremely proud to have known the man.
