UCTRFC Old Boys – whatever happened to Kris van den Berg – Ikeys 2001-2002

Old Boys, Old Boys News

Remember Kris van den Berg, the hard working flank who captained the Ikeys to a 8:8 draw with Maties in 2002 and was leading from the front when UCT smashed their rivals later that year. Renowned for being a cart horse downer, rumour has it Kris still hasn’t finished the beer the boys gave him after the victory.

Name, Nickname: Kris van den Berg

Played at varsity when, what positions and for what teams:

I played for the 1st XV in 2001 and 2002 and captained the side in 2002.

Where are you now and what are you doing:
I recently moved back to Cape Town after spending 3 years in Jhb and the same in London. I am working at Personal Trust as an Investment manager.

Best varsity rugby memory:
It would have to be not losing to Maties in 2002. Drawing the Intervarsity game at Coetzenburg and then beating them in the return leg at Groote Schuur, 1st time in 12 years.

I was renowned for:

Hard work, big hits, cart horse runner and downer!!!

Best thing about UCT rugby:

Spirit! Having moved across from Maties it was an eye opener to see the spirit of the Ikey Tigers. The club house parties and fines meetings as well as characters like Wella, Snoop and Dr Harford will never be forgotten.

Any guys you are still in touch with:
Sure; Dan Palm, Dave Cumming, Snoop, Barry Curtin, Nick Maurer, Charts, Doug Bryant and now that im back in CT I’ve bumped into a few more guys, Bodo, Nick Misplon, Adi Hewlett, Bucky and others….  After varsity I played rugby with Sean Young up in Jhb for 3 years for the Wanderers which was also great.

Do you follow the UCT Ikey Tigers and the Club:
I enjoy having a couple beers on the side of the field while watching the odd game.  Myself, Dan Palm and Dave Edgar are organizing the annual UCT fundraising dinner on the 12 June 09 so will hopefully see many familiar faces there.
