UCTRFC Old Boys – whatever happened to Dave ‘Lurker’ Cumming – Ikeys 1998-2002

Remember Dave Cumming aka Lurker, the UCT center who claims the only reason he was so good at putting guys through gaps, was because he was too much of a cart horse to take them himself.  Lurker was a talented player who helped lift the first team from what used to be 30point thrashings by Maties to becoming seriously competitive.

Played at varsity when, what positions and for what teams:  U21A1 1998, 1999, 1stXV 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002. Centre.

Where are you now and what are you doing?:
In London working for Standard Bank. But planning on coming home in a few years to live the good life.

Best varsity rugby memory?:
Too many to go through, but a few of the best ones are:
– The game that ended the Maties winning streak against UCT at Coetzenburg 2002 (8-8), even though it was a draw we treated it like a win.

– The great win against Villagers on their home ground in 2001 with all the odds stacked against us.

– The Zimbabwe rugby tour of 1999 with the U21’s (and 1st XV)

– Paki trying to tackle Nick Mallett while Nick was saying a speech in the UCT pub. There’s a reason why the boy is sponsored by cape to rio.

“I was renowned for”:

Putting guys into gaps in the mid field (being too much of a cart horse to go through them myself)

Do you follow the UCT Ikey Tigers and the Club?:
Yes, I was lucky enough to be in CT when the IKEY’s played in the Varsity Cup final v MATIES.
Was gutted to see them lose right at the death. With the coaching set up that Dobo has recruited  I’m hoping we’ll raise that trophy this year (’09).
