UCT warm-up vs WP U20
UCT warmed up for the second half of their season last night, with a match against one of two WP U20 trial teams. The second match for the WP youngsters will be tonight at 7pm at Villagers RFC. The Ikey Tigers had to do without a fairly large number of players that have been drafted into the WP trial teams, but again showed the depth of their squad and did well to outscore their opponents 5 tries to 2 in an entertaining match on a wet Green Mile.
The Ikey young guns on trial for WP U20 include regular 1st team and Varsity Cup players such as:
Matt Rosslee, Kyle Wickens, Kyle Brown, Tim Whitehead, Marcelo Sampson, Matt Turner, Martin Muller, Wes Chetty, Mzoi Simani, Mark Goosen, Marvin Christians and Stuart Commins who has returned from injury.
UCT were a bit rusty after the mid year break and there were a fair amount of mistakes, some of which had to do with the adjusted ELV laws, that revert back to the old break-down rules. Given that the team only had one session together and had to do without the U20s and a number of players still on Holiday or injured (JJ Gagiano, Pete Haw, Rob Hopwood, Dylan Rodgers, JP Koster to name a few), it was a good result in an enjoyable, fast game.
For UCT lock Mike Passaportis made a welcome return after a season of Top 10 in Italy, Dave Edgar showed some good initiative and pace, James Martin was back with trademark runs and some great finishing, Dave Clayton was very good under the high ball and Jody Burch had some powerful runs off the back of the scrum.
