The UCT Ikey Tigers completed training matches against the Western Province Vodacom Cup squad and the Stormers squad played back to back in the picturesque town of Riebeek Wes last weekend.
John Dobson’s team was well looked after at Alan Zondagh’s Rugby Performance Centre thoroughly enjoying the excellent facilities.
The Riebeek Valley was already nice and hot when one of two UCT sides kicked off against WP at 9.30. The first half was a good contest, but in the second half Province ran away with it – when the UCT legs tired and the WP bench kept providing more and more subs eager to prove themselves.
Much the same can be said of the UCT vs Stormers fixture that kicked off at 11.30 making the most of the mid day heat. The Stormers looked sharp indeed and as has been reported, their early exit from the Currie Cup means a 4 week headstart in terms of fitness and team cohesion.
Nevertheless the young Ikeys (all U25) proved they were competitive and never let themselves down. The play of the day most defentitely goes to hooker Dayne Jans who got the ball wide following a turnover and counter attack from the UCT 22, “Danger” did what would have been a front ranker’s version of a sidestep and probably coudn’t believe it when he rounded centurian Percy Montgomery (who was already a hero when Danger was born).
On Wednesday UCT took on Boland in Wellington and the boys completed their warm-up against high profile opposition on Saturday 23rd against the SWD Eagles on the Green Mile.
