UCT grab the bonus point at the death
In a tough encounter UCT managed to score in te final play to grab the elusive bonus point against Durb-Bell on Saturday, running out 29-11 victors in the end.
From the whistle, a deep kick-off from the visitors, led to a rampant UCT side scoring under the sticks. Some crisp passing, and delightful support play opened the game in great fashion, and one would have thought that this may be one-way traffic. Unfortunately a lack of rhythm and the inability to make that last pass, ensured that only one more try was scored in the first stanza courtesy of a bullocking run from loosehead prop Niel Naude. This too was converted by Doug Mallett, who added to his try and initial conversion. Despite an almost flawless lineout, and impressive defence, Durb-Bell were able to get on the board via a penalty, and then a try through their hard-working pack. This left the half time score at 11-8 to UCT.
Some harsh words from both Coach Hughes, and the senior players, led to a re-focus. In fact who could not be inspired, by young Mallet’s, “We are the best u20 team in the world!”. A more measured approach saw UCT have a little more territory in the second stanza, and they were able to score another lovely try through Man-of-the-match Morne Smith. UCT kept up the good work, but again a few errors led to some nervous times as we chased that bonus point. With time all but up, an audacious 20m pass by subsitute Trent Jenkinson, saw Sisa Njongwe cross over to seal the bonus point win for the boys in blue and white. Well done. Unbeaten and marching on.
