UCT get back on track

Stu Cummins – back in action for the Tigers
The UCT Ikey Tigers grinded out a convincing victory against Helderberg last night on the windy Green Mile. The conditions were a bit of a leveller, but UCT went into the half leading 24:10 and ended the match 34:17 up and with five points in the bag.

The Ikeys drew first blood early with the wind in their back, when debutant 8th man Sam Peter crossed the line untouched for his first of two tries after some well executed phases. Helderberg found a bit of rhythm, but it was UCT who piled on the pressure with the visitors short of options against the strong wind.

Veteran back Dave Edgar made a welcome return from injury for UCT at outside centre, as did Marcello Sampson (wing) and scrumhalf Stu Commins.
More tries by Rob Hopwood, Therlow Pieterson and another one by Sam Peter made sure the Ikeys went into the half leading 24:10.

The wind was a big factor though and Helderberg pushed hard as the Ikeys got used to the change of conditions after the break. The visitors scored first in the second half, and were back in the game at 24:17 even though UCT had scored four tries to their two.

The Tigers then played the conditions better and held onto the ball. Doug Mallet’s boot kept the scoreboard ticking until Justin Bijl crashed over the line for UCT’s fifth try.

Reserve prop Dylan Rogers was voted man of the match. Hanyani Shimange had a good game and was full of running, as was Matt Rosslee at center who combined well with flyhalf Doug Mallet.

The Ikey Tigers have a midweek WP Super League fixture against Kraaifontein (on Wednesday night), before travelling down the road for their Southern Suburbs derby clash against Villager’s on Saturday.
