Friendlies UCT vs Stellenbosch / UCT U20 vs Parow NNK

It was a hot day indeed for the UCT teams, when they took on the young Matie teams on Saturday, with the sun burning down mercilessly at 35C in the early afternoon fixtures played in Coetzenburg.

UCT A played some enterprising rugby against their much
younger and lighter opposition, but handling errors and lack of
concentration let them down at crucial times. After a constructive week
of training, the lineouts in particular looked sharp with towering Bodo
Sieber and Dayne Allenbrook well in control and the scrums were also
much improved, supplying a solid foundation off the set phases – it was
the breakdown that let down the Ikeys team, with the young Maties
forcing way too many turnovers / freekicks.

UCT played most of
the rugby, unfortunately too often in their own half / 22 and Maties
scored two tries off UCT mistakes. The maroon team, albeit their young
age played in typically clinical Maties fashion, taking every chance for
points, as one would in a Cup Final, while UCT opted to rather make use of the "friendly" character
of the game, playing the ball where possible and going for the
line-outs rather than points. UCT were their own worst enemies on the day, with the hosts benefiting from their mistakes as well as indiscipline – and if playing at 35C wasn’t tough enough, the Ikeys decided to do it with a man down for the last 10, when Andre van Niekerk was sent to the bin for an infringement at the breakdown.

UCT scored two good tries in the second half through flyhalf Dave Clayton and fullback Khanya Mdaka who was full of running.
In the end the penalty kicks clinched the win for the young Matie team,
but UCT coach Richard Ince would have been happy his team got in some
solid game time and showed an improved performance to last week.

UCT U20s vs NNK

Judging by last year’s result, which had been an intense and
hard fought 3:0 victory of UCT’s U20 against their NNK counterparts,
this years young Ikeys would have sent out a terrifying warning to
their league opponents by demolishing NNK U20 A 110:10 in a friendly
played in Parow on Saturday. Watch this space!
