UCT demolish NNK

NNK 11:45 UCT

The Ikeys took a full haul fo five log points vs Parow NNK on Saturday, scoring 7 tries in the process. The UCT side had some injuries and WP call-ups to compensate for. Also it is exam week, which is usually a tricky time for the students, so they did well to get into the game early and snuff out any chances of the struggling NNK outfit, that is bottom of the log and desperate for points in their fight against relegation.

The students were dangerous whenever they played the ball through the phases and exposed the defense on a number of occasions. NNK had the upper hand in the scrums, but lacked the pace on the park to be competitive. The ikeys scored early with a converted Matt Rosslee try and managed to
pile on another three tries, making it 26:6 at the half.

NNK started the second half fired up and managed a scrappy try. UCT then took control again and scored through Jody Burch who had a strong run after a good break by Marvin Christians. Rob Hopwood came on at fullback and showed his raw pace to score two great tries from the half way line. Big Jody Burch also scored another one with a three man overlap after another break down the touchline by Hopwood and Christians.

The score of 45:11 could have been a bit higher, but UCT had a bit of a scrappy phase early in the second half and also was a man down when Pieter Engelbrecht was yellow carded and sent to the bin after repeated breakdown infringement. UCT’s man of the match was lock Donovan Armand who was everwhere, working tirelessly in support and made good meters carrying the ball.

UCT had to do without a number of regulars in the squad and the easy win again shows the clubs great depth. Vakai Hove, JP Koster, Mike Ledwidge, Kyle Brown, Marcello Sampson, Kevin Foote and Matt Turner all out injured. Herbert Mayosi, Pete Haw on exam break and Mark Goosen and Danie van der Merwe away with Province.

Hooker Kendrick Brown had a solid comeback after a 8 months rugby break and center Dave Edgar made a welcome return for his first league appearance this season since injuring his shoulder in a pre-season match.

UCT now have a two week break and will then take on Helderberg on the 21st in a match rescheduled due to the Ikeys’ Vasity Cup commitments in April.
