UCT defend trophy vs False Bay
The Mark Jordaan memorial trophy will grace the UCT club for another season after UCT A beat False Bay 43:31 – scoring 7 tries to 5 on the weekend. The annual Mark Joordan memorial day was again a celebration of rugby and the substancial crowd paid tribute to the two club’s long standing and positive relationship.
The False Bay 1st team, coached by former UCT U21 coach Brendan Fogarty and captained by fromer UCT 1st team player Justin van Winkle had the UCT A team on their toes and the Bay crowd on their feet in the opening minutes of the main match, scoring two early tries.
After the initial wake up, the Ikeys settled into the game and quickly responded with some well worked tries. It was however obvious that the team was a bit rusty – understandably, after only one week of training together post trials – with the set phases and line-outs in particular lacking the required slickness and assertiveness to provide quality ball for the backline.
For UCT flank Ryan Hammond was full of energy, captain Bodo Sieber put in some crunching tackles, Justin Bijl and Andre Coetzer scored some excellent tries showing great skill and pace. The man of the match was speedy UCT fullback Pietie Olivier who with great vision and acceleration carved through the Bay defence at will and as one of the stand-outs would have put up his hand for selection into the Ikey Tigers Varsity Cup squad.
False Bay kept themselves in the game playing street-wise rugby, using clever kicks to turn the UCT defence and played well for position. They were rewarded with a total of 5 tries and would have been happy with their overall performance. The UCT team, made up of Varsity Cup fringe players and a handful of experienced campaigners not eligible for the Cup due to the U-25 policy proved that the club has great depth and can look forward to a competitive season through the ranks.
