Turner for Bristol and England 7s

Matt Turner the Ikey Tigers winger and “Most valuable player of the 2008 season” has this week left SA to start a contract with Bristol and join the England Sevens Team.

Mathew is a try-scoring “machine” who has come through the Western Province Rugby ranks, having played his school rugby for one of SA’s top schools, Bishops in Cape Town.

From there, he went on to the WP Rugby Institute (Academy) in Stellenbosch, where he gained selection for the WP under 19 team, which he represented consistently during the ABSA Provincial Under 19 competition 2007. The WP Academy fell under the auspices of the WP Director of Rugby, who at the time was Nick Mallet.

This year Mathew was selected for the SA Under 20 squad for the 2008 IRB U/20 World Cup (in Wales)

He was also a regular member of the UCT Team which played in the final of the inaugural Varsity Cup competition. Turner was the top overall try scorer in the competition; a major contributing factor to UCT’s ending at the top of the log, ahead of Stellenbosch University.

Mathew is an exceptionally quick attacking player, and his not-so-large frame belies his amazing strength and tenacity. He is also a very strong tackler, who shows no fear in defence.

Now Mathew has flown over to join Bristol and the England 7’s squad, he has a massive future ahead of him, although he will be greatly missed at varsity, we are all very proud of him and  wish him all the best for his adventure!
