Try fest sees Ikeys score seven

By Wessley Thring

After their 52-26 win against Union Milnerton over the weekend, it’s safe to say that the FNB Ikey Tigers haven’t been slowed down at all by their time off. Managing to cross the try line seven times, the team has picked up right where they left off as they continue to show signs of improvement.

“We started really well and managed to score five tries in the first half. We kept the ball alive and really played that exciting brand of rugby that’s expected from UCT,” said coach Esterhuizen.

The FNB Ikey Tigers went into halftime leading by a score line of 38-3, but their conditioning caught up to them in the second half as Union Milnerton managed to momentarily claw their way back into the game.

“They scored three tries in five minutes, but we managed to keep them out after that and eventually score two tries to pull away,” Esterhuizen said.

“We’re very stoked with the win. There are things that came off in the match that we’ve been working on all year, so it’s great to see the team’s progress,” he added.

There’s not much time to bask in the feeling of victory, as Wednesday evening brings with it the challenge of an away game against Victorians. While the FNB Ikey Tigers are clearly ahead of Victorians on the log, it is well known that fixtures against them will always prove to be a challenge.

“We’ll just manage our squad, see who’s available, and then off we go. It’s always a tough match against Vics, and even though we’re significantly higher than them on the log, we know they’re still a dangerous side,” said Esterhuizen. The FNB Ikey Tigers will be without Luke Stringer, Rayno Mapoe and David Meihuizen for Wednesday’s game.

The match against Victorians is set to kicks off at 21:00 on Wednesday, the 23rd of August at Danie Craven Stadium. Team announcement to follow.
