Trojans stumble against Maties

FNB Maties Young Guns scored six tries on their way to a dominant 45-16 victory over UCT at the Green Mile on Monday.

The visitors opened the scoring when No.8 Michael Murphy got over for their first try which was converted by flyhalf Kobus Putter, and that was followed up soon afterwards when flank Eital Bredenkamp crossed the whitewash to make it 13-0.

The team from Stellenbosch took a commanding 21-0 lead into the half-time break thanks to their third try which was scored by hooker Cullen Collopy and converted by Putter.

The visitors kept the pressure on and two quick tries after half-time saw them open up a 37-0 lead.

Lock Meyer Ferreira was first to score in the second half, and that was followed up soon afterwards by a try from wing Boutros Mbina, with both converted by Putter.

UCT eventually got on the scoreboard when replacement back Storm Winter got over for a try which was converted by flyhalf, Rob Anderson to make it 37-8.

However, Maties hit back soon afterwards with a try to Pieter de Wet stretching their lead to 45-8 at the second strategy break.

UCT managed a second try through inside centre Justin Scott, which was also converted by Bednall, but that was all for the hosts as Maties held on for a comfortable victory.
