TOUGH SEASON OPENER FOR TEAMS ON THE GREEN MILE

Ever heard of the term ‘there is no such thing as an easy win’, well the teams in last nights matches surely proved that.Team’s had to dig deep to get their first log points on the board.

The main featured match included the Steinhoff Tornadoes against the Steinhoff Panthers. The 2010 UCT Varsity Cup representatives were favourites going into the match although being without regular number 10, Matthew Russel, who was on Club duties. Although winning the match the score is no reflection of how tough an apponent the Steinhoff Panthers were on the evening. Let’s take an in-depth look at the match.

The Tornadoes started like a house on fire, probing into the Panthers defence and soon found the break through in the 9th minute with Sharief Nordien jotting down his first try of the 2010 campaign. At the kickoff panthers were all attack pushing the Nadoes into their own half. The Panthers came close in scoring in two occasions but the Nadoes defended as if their lives depended on that slim five nil lead. The Nadoes did however relieve some pressure when scrumhalf, Anton van der berg put in a sneaking chip kick into the Panther 22 for Sharief to chase down and chase it  he did. Scoring his second try for the evening. The Tornadoes went into half time with a slim 10- 0 lead.

The second half started off with Nadoes playing all the rugga in the panthers half and this too paid off with Sharief scoring his third for the eveining. Nadoes finally got their bonus point try late in the match. The Nadoes ran out 20 -00 victors.

Other results saw Ikhaya scraping through with a 03 – 00 win over Clarendon. In another exciting encounter, Smuts beat Ubumbo 18 – 14, Shebeen Boys beat Marquard 12 – 10. Wild boys won Kopano 10 – 00, and Turtles thrashing new comers Catsville 34 – 05.
