Tigers win Bellville Tech mud wrestle
The FNB UCT Ikey Tigers showed great character last night to outscore visiting Bellville Tech by four tries to two and grind out a 28:21 bonus point victory on the muddy and wet Green Mile. The other UCT teams also scored important victories on the night.
It was a great night of rugby on the Mile with all UCT teams walking away winners – 2nds 35:3, 3rds 8:3 (in the rain) and the U20 Trojans bounced back from their opening round defeat to whitewash the visitors 78:0 scoring 15 tries in the process.
The conditions were ill suited to the students' favoured style of spreading the ball to the wings and coach Hanyani Shimange (a front ranker himself) is rumoured to have considered fielding 15 forwards when the rain came down in torrents all day.
But the downpours lifted, the team including a backline ran out onto the soggy park and UCT proved they know their Green Mile better than anyone.
UCT started with intent and once most of the white Ikeys shorts had their muddy welcome to the game they they were on the scoreboard and up 21:10 at the half.
Bellville Teck staged a great fightback in an evenly matched second half, but the Tigers showed great composure and hung on to stay in the lead and finish the match with a bonus point at 28:21.
UCT travel to the Strand to play Helderberg who are back in the top flight on Saturday.
