Tigers Set Tone for Crucial Week
The Ikey Tigers made a meal of Belhar on Saturday, beating them 52-0 when the two teams came up against one another in the second half of the WP Super League.
Playing away from home, the Tigers struggled to find their voice in the first half – the halftime scoreboard reading only 12-0 in favour of UCT. However, with the wind at the backs after the break, the boys pulled it together, clocking in a massive second half performance.
In the days leading up to the game, UCT coach Kevin Musikanth said “Belhar are a strong side having almost beaten Stellenbosch, and drawing with UCT in last year’s fixture. This made a mouth-watering prospect.”
With Belhar lying fifth on the log, and UCT lying second, there was a lot to play for. He further explained: “Our boys had prepared well and were committed to the cause and ready for a big match.”
The game saw the return of Dylan Sage, which Musikanth was enthusiastic about, explaining that his presence made a huge difference to the team.
The coach also noted that the game saw some impressive young players coming through backed by the experienced heads of the likes of Richard Stewart, Ross Jones Davies, and James Alexander.
The win allows the Tigers to maintain their position in second place on the log, a position they will look to improve on, on Wednesday 6th August when they come up against current log-leaders Hamiltons.
In terms of changes made to the squad, Musikanth explained that the team will remain consistent for Wednesday’s game.
Considering their chances, he said “Hamiltons will be the toughest challenge yet as they are currently unbeaten, and have an experienced side that will be fresh after a two-week break. Their coach Anton Moolman is an experienced campaigner and will have prepared his troops well.”
Despite the challenge the game will present, he finished off by saying “our confident young team will have their hands full this coming Wednesday, but we will as always prepare thoroughly and take our A game through to Green Point and be up for the challenge.”
Hamilton RFC vs Ikeys – Wednesday 6th – Green Point from 18.00. 1s teams KO 21.00.
