Tigers maul Kraaifontein
Marcello Sampson – here against Shimlas – also had too much pace for Kraaifontein, creating plenty of momentum and scoring a try of his own.
Kraaifontein’s resurrection came to a cruel end last night on the Green Mile when UCT ran in eleven tries to smash the visitors 67:7.
UCT’s coach Kevin Foote had an excellent debut – his charges were a league ahead in all facets of the game and made their intentions clear from the very beginning. They started against the wind and the first time Kraaifontein had the ball in the first ten minutes, was to kick-off after the first of many UCT tries.
The Ikeys produced some vintage varsity rugby as they ran their opponents ragged to rack up a 34:0 halftime lead into the wind.
Fullback Therlow Pietersen was lethal in attack and scored four excellent tries, frustrating the ‘Kraaie’ defenders at will. Doug Mallet and Matt Rosslee again combined well and Dave Edgar ran some excellent lines.
The score was 67:0 with just minutes to go and credit must go to Kraaifontein who used their only visit to the Ikeys 22 in the second half to capitalise on some penalties and a 5m scrum and managed a consolation try.
Replacements Wes Chetty and Freddie Strange celebrated their first team debuts with solid performances.
Many in the UCT camp put up their hands on the night, Pietersen was great in attack, Stu Commins put great pace on the ball, but UCT’s man of the match was Nick Fenton Wells who put in a monumental effort running with the ball and defending like a Trojan.
Moment of the Match: The hit of the day was Bodo Siebers crunching tackle on Kraaifontein’s 8th man who got blindsided by a German torpedo as he caught a long pass. The play of the day was Dane Galleys 60 meter try off a kick off, where the Springbok Emerging Sevens player showed great pace and rounded off his solo effort with a sneaky dummy that had the defending wing tackle his shadow.
UCT take on local rivals Villagers at Brookside on Saturday.
