Tigers kick off second half against SK Walmers

UCT are travelling to the cauldron that is the Greenpoint Track
this Saturday to get their second half of the season under way against log leading SK Walmers.

SK have played the most amount of games in the league so far, 14 compared to UCT’s 9 – having had no break to speak of and are table topping even though they were beaten by Maties last weekend. UCT have had limited training time with the Varsity Vac – as always – making it difficult for all players to attend sessions, but are confident they are ready to start on a high.

The students are also depleted by a phenomenally high number of Ikeys selected for WP’s Currie Cup clash with the Blue Bulls this weekend – a record eight Ikeys have made their way into the match day 22. Other than that, the club of course also provides some strong performers for the WP U21 team coached by John Dobson.

The first half clash saw SK beat UCT’s second team at home by 20:19 – this of course was two weeks before the Varsity Cup final.

Tomorrow’s Ikey Tigers team is captained by experienced loose forward Don Aramand and includes Pallo Manuel who returns to the pack after a lengthy injury break – also back is Tiger Bax, following a stint in the UK at Saracens. There are a couple of new faces in the mix who have put up their hand during the USSA tournament, they will be guided by the experience of Wes Chetty and Armand up front, as well as hard man Andre Coetzer and Varsity Cup top try scorer Therlow Pietersen in the backline.

“SK Walmers are always a tough assignment – especially away from home says Foote.

“They’re a tough team to play against as they feed of your mistakes, so we will need to keep those errors to a minimum in front of what is always a passionate crowd at the Track.”
