Tigers go big for opener

The FNB Ikeys have announced the Ikey Tigers team for the crucial Varsity Cup opener against FNB NWU Puk on Monday 17.00 on the Green Mile and the coaches have opted for a big pack and have included a few new faces.

Coach Kevin Musikanth is excited about the new law variations and says "We believe the Free Catch rule will have a big effect on the games and it is something we have worked with extensively in pre-season".  If any player catches a ball from an opposing kick before it touches the ground, the referee will play free kick advantage. This basically extends the classic "mark" advantage to anywhere on the field and allows for more direct counter attacking.

In the backs experienced and familiar players Ross Jones Davies, Richard Steward, Lihleli Xoli and captain Liam Slatem get complemented by exciting new talent in center pairing Huw Jones, Guy Schwikkard and former Rondebosch High flyhalf Dean Grant who has joined from Maties to do a post grad degree at UCT.

"We have gone for a big pack with a powerful loose trio including Guy Alexander, Vince Jobo and Shaun McDonald" says Musikanth who is confident the side has got the right balance to get the season off to a winning start.

Hard working James Kilroe and big Jan Uys will provide plenty of power in the second row while Digby Webb, Neil Rautenbach and Joel Carew bring the experience and stability up front.
