In what should have been a dress rehearsal for Intervarsity, the FNB Ikey Tigers went down to the Maties Vics side by 26:27 following a poor second half that ended with 13 Ikeys on the park and no further points on the board.
The UCT side had a decent start to the game and scored four tries in the first half through big outisde back Dylan Sage who crossed the whitewash twice, as well as tries by Thomas Bednall and back row forward Tinotenda Zakeyo. Nick Holton converted three of the four five pointers and UCT were sitting pretty with a 26:12 halftime score and a bonus point in the bag.
The second half was disappointing and UCT lacked the cohesion and focus that had made the a force in recent weeks. To make matters worse, both prop Joel Carew and hooker Chad Solomon were red carded in an off the ball incident, so the Ikeys ended up playing with 13 men. The duo are now unavailable for Intervarsity on Saturday which will test the UCT front row depth.
The only consolation is that the game still yielded 2 log points, for four tries scored and the narrow loss.
Well done to The Ikey Tiger's U21 and U19 sides who beat their Vics opposition (U21) 24:12 and (U19) 22:17.
The Ikey Tigers are in action at Intervarsity on Saturday 3pm at UCT taking on old rivals FNB Maties, with the rest of the club also part of the presticious event in earlier games.
