Three UCT wins in Ceres
It has been am excellent day at out in Ceres for the UCT teams and the hard pre-season work showed on the field as all three teams comprehensively outplayed their counterparts from the Boland.
The UCT A team in particular was in dangerous running form and was just to fast, to skilled and too clever for the big Ceres team as they won 38:26, leading 26:6 at half time.
UCT started well and scored some early tries, benefiting from turn-overs and quickly taken free kicks, which paired with their free-flowing style of running rugby at times made them look untouchable. UCT’s backs were in great form with scrumhalf Carl Miles No 10 James Bailes putting pace
into the attack and enabling his backline to break the defense on numerous occasions. Fullback Pietie Olivier scored, Andre van Niekerk touched down twice and flyhalf James Bailes helped himsef to a try and added some conversions. Ceres only points came from two penalties.
Some front row injuries on the Ceres team forced the ref to call for
uncontested scrums, which levelled the game a bit in the second half
and concentration lapses on UCT’s side allowed the hosts back into the
game. UCT’s Brad Gornall scored the only forward’s try of the day, finishing off a strong break by Bodo Sieber and scrumhalf Carl Miles added another 5 pointer as he found the defense wide open, while a handful of Ceres forwards practised their fighting skills with the UCT front rowers.
Man of the match was Pietie Olivier who was again a class act in the no 15 jersey.
