Alan "Butch" Deuchar – Ikey rugby giant

/
Butch Deuchar is one of the best lock forwards to have played for UCT. That is quite a statement, but fully justified. Lock forwards do not fulfil their potential unless they have special rugby qualities. He's now leaving South Africa to move to France on a permanent basis and we caught up with him on his plans as well as his rugby journey.

Ikeys Rowing the Atlantic

/
Former Ikey Rugby players Martin Muller and Grant Kemp along with two other rugby teammates from Hong Kong will be participating in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge at the end of the year. It is a 4800km race from La Gomera in the Canary Islands to Antigua. They are doing this in an effort to raise money for their chosen charity.

A Tribute to Gary Grant

Catching up with Suwi Chibale in Cambridge

An extract from "Hooked on Varsity"

/
An extract from “Hooked on Varsity” by the late Ivan Nurick, which was published in December 2009. Ivan was the unofficial historian of UCT Rugby, and he was asked to select a few fantasy teams, including a “Best Medical XV”, which includes a number of Ikey players and legends.

Chris Pope: Ikey, Western Province and Springbok rugby legend

/
Chris is famously remembered for scoring the winning try for Western Province against the All Blacks at Newlands in 1976. To the Ikeys he is also remembered for captaining the Ikeys in 1976 to a 10 – 3 Intervarsity win over the Matie’s, for the first time in 15 years!

A Tribute to Greg Swiel

/
Of all the marvellous players who have worn the blue-and-white Ikeys stripes in the nearly 140 years of club history, not all that many would match Greg Swiel for the maverick nature of his ball-playing creativity, daring attacking initiative, or sheer audacity, allied with skill, in launching counter-attacks from seemingly impossibly deep positions on the field.

Ikey Legend, Allan Danker

/
Anyone interested in rugby in the Western cape in the sixties, seventies and eighties would remember the name Allan Danker well. Allan was a respected referee and coach in the Western Cape from 1959 to 1990. Allan has a strong bond with Ikeys rugby and coached at UCT from 1966 to 1980.
