It’s A Dawn Of A New Era For UCT Rugby

Sikhumbuzo Muchenje

On the 1st of September the University of Cape Town achieved yet another milestone when its first women’s rugby team, known as the UCT Swifts, took to the field to compete in their first game of rugby at City Park, Athlone.

It was a combination of excitement and nervousness in the camp since most of the players had never played a rugby match before.

However, the side had the full backing from coaching staff, led by Kariem and Iby, to focus on implementing what they have learnt at practice on The Green Mile.

The Swifts played an enterprising game of rugby that caught the attention of many. Their valiant effort was not enough to secure a first victory, losing 19-10 to a well oiled developmental side.

Despite the loss, the players held their heads high and were commended by Western Province administration for their efforts and were encouraged to aim higher.

The Swifts are looking forward to more games and to growth in ladies rugby at UCT, and we are grateful for the university’s effort and support in our endeavor.

Finally, we would like to thank Gavin and to the coaches Iby and Kariem for investing and believing in the Swifts.

The future is certainly looking bright for ladies rugby at UCT.
