Intervarsity 2013 – Ikeys vs Maties
The official and full resurrection of one of the oldest sporting rivalries in South Africa – the University of Cape Town (Ikeys) vs University of Stellenbosch (Maties) Intervarsity – is only a few days away.
Intervarsity between Ikeys and Maties is a tradition dating back more than 100 years (it started on 1911 to be precise, when SA College took on Victoria College in rugby) and the match-up used to fill Newlands stadium with crowds of students, alumni and supporters in its heyday.
It was 1993 when the 75 year old tradition stopped, the UCT vs Stellenbosch multi-sport Intervarsity was scaled back, apart from regular but scattered fixtures where teams and athletes from both Universities would meet on the sports fields. The rugby of course kept some momentum through the years and the advent of the Varsity Cup has helped further revive the great rivalry.
You may have attended a rugby, soccer or waterpolo intervarsity between Ikeys and Maties in recent years, but the single sport Intervarsities don't compare to the full multi-sport Intervarsity we're about to experience again!
The big day or days, when all sporting codes take on their rival counter-parts with the ultimate goal of winning the overall Intervarsity bragging rights and the full campus support for both camps are back.
This Friday 3 May to Sunday 5 May will see 35 sports codes and over 90 teams go head to head!
UCT rugby is one of the pillars of the event and we expect cracking fixtures on Saturday, with the 1st teams going head to head at 16.00. It is not to be missed!
