As we had reported, plenty of UCT boys were in action at the SA Sevens last weekend – three of them walked away with a medal when, after edging England in the final of Dubai’s desert tournament, Paul Treu’s Springboks made it two out of two and finally took the SA tournament in front of an ecstatic home crowd.
For the men in green it had been a long wait indeed, being successful all over the circuit for years, but never having taken the trophy on home soil finally came to a glorious end. After completing the pool matches topping the group having beaten the USA, Georgia and a strong Australia, the stage was set for day two at the Outeniqua stadium.
South Africa met and beat England 17-12 in a quarter which was a re-match of last weekend’s Dubai final, with the Boks edging the team in white yet again.
Then Fiji was taken care of 7-21 in the semi final and the George crowd got ready for the Grande Finale – SA vs the All Blacks.
As usual when these great Sevens rivals meet, the final could hardly have been tenser, but the Boks came out tops beating their long time rivals 12:7.
uctrfc.co.za cought up with Ikey Tigers flank Mpho Mbiyozo, one of the heroes of the day.
UCTRFC.co.za: Well done for making it two out of two, must be special to finally crack the SA tournament? Even Paul Treu was ecstatic!
Mpho: Yeah it was fantastic to finally get one on home-soil, its been a eluding us for years now…and after 10years of heartache, it felt really good to finally pull one out the bag. Yeah Paul was very ecstatic about the win, so was everyone else in the stadium, or should i say most of the people.
Mpho: Well didn’t get to play against Matt, unfortunately he never came on against us, anyway, I doubt I’d have had the time to give him a good old chirp or two, the game is to quick and he’s not the slowest kid around either. Yeah quiet a few of our varsity boys in the US team and we had them up first, but sorry to disappoint, no chirps were exchange there either - we all try conserve as much energy as possible. (laughs)!
UCTRFC: How is youngster Kyle Brown coming along? Are you looking after him?
Mpho: Kyle is coming along very nicely, even though he didn’t get too much milage on the pitch but when he did, he made the most of it. He’s gonna do well for South African Sevens in the near future.
UCTRFC: Did all the varsity guys have some drinks together at the function? Or maybe even Twoooooo?
Mpho: Nah we actually didn’t get to have a few together, a bit sad now that i think about it. But there’s tons more tournaments coming up and we’ll most definitely have one maybe even twooooo and talk about the good old days at the Green Mile.
UCTRFC: Thanks for taking the time! Enjoy your break.
Mpho: It’s a pleasure – As you know: Once an Ikey, always a Tiger!
