Ikeys head to Stellenbosch

UCT Rugby take on Victorians on Saturday at Coetzenburg stadium in what promises to be a high paced running rugby affair.

The Ikeys team is coached by former captain and US International JJ Gagiano this half of the season.  The UCT stalwart is doing a fantastic job and gets a helping hand from recently appointed director of rugby Kevin Musikanth.

Musikanth expects a hard match in Stellenbosch. “In the first round encounter UCT managed a last gasp victory and the students from Stellies are looking good this year coming very close to Durbell who are the log leaders." he said.

"It is a tough encounter away from home for us, but hopefully our rustiness after the 2 month break will be over and done with. We had a good second half against a plucky Bellville Tech side last week after an iffy start to the game. We were unlucky not to get our bonus point try in the last play of the game when a pass was judged to be forward with our centre on his way to the try line" he commented on last week's 22:10 away win.

The team had a good week's training, on Monday night the Green Mile was of course dressed in an unusual guise as a Football pitch for UCT's Football club to host NMMU in their first Varsity Football home match. This however did not interrupt the preparation of the blue and white rugby sides.

There is only one change in the pack, where Deacon Chowles gets a start at tight head prop. In the backs Stephen Wallace replaces the injured Dylan Frylink at scrumhalf and Tiger Bax is unavailable and gets replaced at centre.

"Vics will no doubt come out firing, but we have prepped well and have managed to confront issues that perhaps weren’t as polished as we had hoped for in the match against Bell Tech. It is going to be a cracker on Saturday.” concludes Musikanth.

The Ikeys rugby sides are in for a day of running rugby against a student club that is known to favour a similar style.  The conditions are dry and sunny, so we will indeed be in for exciting games!
