Ikeys stay on course for league title

Ikey Tigers stay top of the log following three back to back wins in a crucial week of high profile games and according to SA Club Rugby at this stage probably top the "mythical club ranking" in SA overall.

The Ikeys students played an excellent late night battle away at Hamilton's on a Wednesday night and had a short break before facing the challenge of derby rivals False Bay at the Green Mile on Saturday which they won 21:13.

The match marked the first full use of the new Neville Isdell Rugby Center and the players from both teams were full of praise for the new facility.

On the field The Bay started with the wind in their backs and went 7:0 up. UCT then turned the tables in the second half and piled on three converted tries to False Bay's 13 points to come out winners – though without a bonus point.

UCTRFC.co.za spoke to Ikeys forward James Kilroe about what he labelled a crunch week. The engineering student explained "During our mid year break and the as part of the conditioning and gym work we did, we had already earmarked this week as crucial."

He added: "We put a lot of planning into it and while our goal was an ambitious 15 points, we are happy to have a full set of wins and 14 points to show for it."

The team has seen the welcome return of a few more senior players in Tiger Bax, Dylan Sage, Kilroe's lock partner Levi Odendaal and hooker Neil Rautenbach – all back from various provincial and overseas rugby stints.

Ikeys lock Kilroe felt "Having these guys back at this stage in the league has been great for the squad, they have brought additional experience and depth, so the squad could be managed better"

The Tigers are topping the log and have two matches left to play Helderberg on Friday and Vicorians from the University of Stellenbosch next week.

When asked about the team's goals Kilroe said "We are looking to work hard and get five points against Helderberg so we can be in a position to stay top come the Vics game. It really is a tight finish to the league, but we are aiming for the title and need to get maximum points to stay in contention"

The WP Super League will see a dramatic finish, with Maties taking on Hamiltons as the final and league deciding match. There are a number of permutations, but there is a chance of UCT claiming the league title if they can get optimal results in their final two fixtures. They can then cheer for the ideal outcome in the Maties vs Hammies showdown – a match played after the Ikeys last fixture – with a very real chance of silverware, depending on bonus points and mathematical detail.

champs show why they would top mythical SA club rankings after beating & over last week.
