Ikeys season comes to an end

The FNB Ikey Tigers ended their domestic league season on Saturday as they lost 39 – 19 to Hamiltons in Green Point. The result, which was inconsequential to their league standing, brought a close to a season of mixed emotions.

“It was a nice game to watch, we started well and had the lead initially. We gave the ball a bit of air and had some fun, and the match was in the balance until about the last five minutes when Hamiltons scored two tries,” said Esterhuizen.

“By Saturday, we had lost ten hookers, so I had to cal up the hooker from the u20s on the day. We couldn’t seem to win a lineout on the day even though we had ample opportunities to do so, so that cost us some points. But we really ran them well: by the time there was only twenty-five minutes left of the game, there were always about three Hamiltons players taking a rest on the ground whenever the match was stopped,” Explained Esterhuizen.

Many will be disappointed because this season failed to produce any silverware, but there are positives that can be taken from it, namely the emergence of the youth. The younger players have performed better than expected on several occasions, with the u20 side going unbeaten all season. That, coupled with the experience gained by those who played for the first team, guarantee that the future of the rugby club rests on reliable shoulders.

“We had four matches where we lost by less than four points, and we also drew two games. So if you put that into perspective, if we had scored four more tries or not conceded four of the ones that we did, we could have been competing with the teams at the top. But like I said before, it’s just that little bit of experience that cost us. None of the tight games went our way, but perhaps next season, with the same team, more of them will. There were only two games I was disappointed with, but I’m proud of the boys. They played like champions,” said Esterhuizen when reflecting on the season.

The FNB Ikey Tigers will now take part in the President’s Cup, and will take on Kuilsriver on Wednesday, the 7th of September.
