Ikeys ready to take on False Bay

The teams that played the 2008 Mark Jordaan Memorial – UCT won 43:31.
UCT are gearing up for a classic derby at “The Bay” this Saturday, both False Bay and the Ikey Tigers come off good wins and will be rearing to go. The day features a packed schedule of games with lots of flavour, guaranteed excitement and nostalgia as the False Bay match doubles as the Mark Joordaan memorial trophy match.

The Ikeys have managed to keep the trophy in their club house for over a  decade until in 2010 “The Bay” got the better of them, with the fixture played in pre-season when UCT had to do without the squad of Varsity Cup players. To re-level the playing field, the memorial clash is now scheduled as the regular league fixture and is bound to attract a large and vocal crowd.

But there is even more at stake as UCT beating Maties 28-19 in the annual Intervarsity this past weekend has set the cat amongst the pigeons in the Western Province Super League.

The leader after the first round of nine matches qualifies for the National Club Championships and the Ikeys’ victory, together with 2009 champions Hamilton’s 32-31 win over Stellenbosch’s other team, Steinhoff Victorians, has ensured that as many as six teams are mathematically still in the running as the first half of the season in the Cape comes to an end.
