Ikeys Looking to Maintain Positive Start

On Saturday afternoon, the full of confidence FNB Ikey Tigers will travel away to take on Sir Lowrians. The last time these two teams met, the Ikeys had to dig deep and ended up winning by seven points, but coach Christiaan Esterhuizen is well aware of the unique challenge his team faces on Saturday.

“This is possibly our toughest away match of the season. It’s tough playing out there and it can be quite intimidating being the away team,” Esterhuizen said.

“They’re a big and heavy pack, and they can really make some metres if they get on the ball. They also have a very good number fifteen who’s dangerous. But we’re definitely confident, we’ll have to limit his kicking and keep the ball well because they’ve got a very good counter attack,” Esterhuizen explained.

“I’d like us to play well from the first minute, and not just wait until we’re behind to start playing. Perhaps we’ll be a bit more conservative and try to dominate more territory, but hopefully we’ll be able to build up a nice lead and start playing with the ball in hand a bit more,” He concluded.

In terms of team news, the squad remains relatively unchanged. There are no fresh injuries and no players have returned from injury as of yet. Some players, however, have been called up to the Western Province squad and therefore won’t be available for selection this coming Saturday afternoon.

The FNB Ikey Tigers will take on Sir Lowrians at Sir Lowrians A at 16:00 on Saturday, the 31st of July. Although all of their focus is on the task in front of them, both the players and coach Esterhuizen will be ready when they host Victorians 1st XV on Wednesday, the 3rd of August.
