Ikeys kick off league vs Belhar

The FNB UCT rugby teams are finally kicking off their league seasons this Saturday, welcoming Belhar to the Green Mile in what promises to be an exciting start to the Super League.

The Ikey Tigers are rearing for action and are looking to build on their good win against Wits in their final Varsity Cup match a few weeks back. The Tigers are kicking off at 3.30pm on Saturday – the weather looks to be fantastic with temperatures in the high 20s.

The UCT first side of course have had a coaching re-shuffle with head coach Kevin Foote moving to Australia to assist the Western Force coaching team as a Defense and Backline specialist. Foote a former Ikeys player, captain and the 2011 success coach is sad to leave 'his' team, but excited about the opportunity in Perth. "I have been offered a two and a half year contract and will start as a defense coach and the franchise will add responsibilities down the line." His planned additional role as a recruiter for the Super outfit might see more SA and even UCT players get a look into at the Western Australian set-up.

Foote who has been a stand out ambassador for the varsity spirit and Ikeys rugby has handed over to the capable hands of former Ikeys player and Springbok hooker Hanyani Shimange. Shimange of course has been involved in the UCT set up as a forward coach for a while now.

Belhar had their first match already and have tested Community Cup team SK Walmers at the Green Point track, going down narrowly 17:19. It is their third year in the top flight and they have continuously improved and will prove a staunch opposition to the UCT charges.

All UCT teams will be in action on Friday night and Saturday. The UCT 2nds, the Eagles have had some touch pre season encounters and look primed to take the challenge to their visitors, as do the 3rds.

The U20 Trojans – recent Varsity Young Guns semi finalists are expected to have too much fire power for their visitors and will look to play an entertaining running game to make the most of their first league outing.
