Ikeys in Cape Town Tens premier league final

The Ikeys Team playing in their pre-season pink and blue had a very successful Cape Town Tens tournament – the team coached by Gunner Hughes and Ant Fenton Wells marched through to the finals, beating Western Province and Hamiltons in the quarters and semis.

UCT were formidable against WP socrong three tries in the first half. The Hamiltons clash however was a tight one that went into Golden Try extra time after the teams drew 12:12 at the hooter. Hamiltons favourited a power driven direct approach while the young Ikeys opted for flair and giving the ball some air.

There were some deft touches by the likes of Oliver Braithwaite who caught a well weighted chip to set up UCT for a try under the posts. Young scrum half Jethro Valentine also proved a live wire and hand full for the defense as was skilled flank Zandy MacDonald.

The Gand Final was – as so often against Maties – the two times Cape Town Tens champions. The men in maroon used their chances well, a slipped tackle and a lucky bounce off a long range kick was enough to set uo their third triumph.

The Ikeys were made up of Varsity Cup fringe players – as the main squad was of course busy with final preparations for Monday’s clash vs the Shimas.

There were plenty of UCT and UCT flavoured teams in action – the Galetti Varsity Blues featured a number of UCT stars of recent years and MC Marais, the Cowboys and the might Nadoes also made their presence felt in the Beer League.
