Ikeys frustration against Vics

The Ikey Tigers played Victorians last night at Coetzenberg and after piling on a demanding lead, the Varsity Cup finalists forgot to close off the game and allowed Vics to come back to claim a 32:30 win.

The Ikeys who had beaten Vics by 50:20 in the first round travelled to the Maties stronghold of Coetzenberg with the clear goal to get five points to add to their log tally. However after starting on a strong note and with those intentions quickly converted into points the Tigers let the game slip, allowing Vics to steal the win in the final act of play.

“It was a very frustrating and immature display in the final minutes of the game, the game was well won.” said the disappointed coach Kevin Foote after the match. Even the Vics coach could not quite believe what had just happened, but in the end the scoreboard holds all the answers and it said Vics 32 Ikeys 30.

UCT’s tries were scored by Tiger Bax, flyer Jannie Bester and hooker Matthew Page, with Bester’s late score putting UCT ahead by 30-27.

Vics, however, kept plugging away at the Ikeys’ defence – deciding against kicking for poles, which would have led to a draw, and going for touch instead. Their bold move eventually paid off.

The Ikeys final fixture in the 2010 Super League season is against Helderberg on Saturday the 18th of September and it looks like the team will have to settle for a very disappointing 5th log position.
