The FNB UCT Ikey Tigers came back in impressive form, from a 0:7 half time deficit to down heavyweights Hamilton RFC by 26:14 on Wednesday 5th August.
UCT took on Hammies on a windless and balmy winter night and spectators were treated to a top class, tough and honest Super League game.
Ikeys Director of Rugby Kevin Musikanth comment of the Belhar and Hamilton's wins was "It has been a fantastic two fixtures for our club. Culminating on a sterling 40 minute second half performance from our flag ship side the 1st XV last night on the green mile. Probably the best 40 minutes of league rugby this year."
After the initial exchanges were very even, the visitors got on the scoreboard first following a penalty try off a collapsed lineout maul and took a 0:7 lead into the half.
In the second half, the Ikeys rallied in style to score three quick unanswered tries and looked dangerous on the counter attack and with good continuity and pace in the backline causing problems for the defense. Thomas Bednall was first to barge over, then it was flank Jason Klaason who finished off a lineout maul.
Klaasen would get a second shortly after, forcing his way over following some close range pick and go's, to give UCT some breathing space, but the visitors from Greenpoint recovered, shifted into gear and finished off a multiphase attack with a converted try.
The students had a few more promising opportunities to score and in the end it was big Mark Prior who was at hand to pick up a pop pass following some good interplay and the forward crashed over for the bonus point try.
According to Musikanth the team was well balanced and in depth analysis of the opposition was key to success. He was full of praise for the team and his fellow coaches: "Complements must go to coaches Essie and Craig, who have slotted in beautifully, with regards to the coaching and designation within the team structure. It really is positive in terms of how Hammies were beaten last night."
A great win for the Ikey Tigers, who are second in the log with games in hand.
