Ikeys fall short against UWC

The FNB Ikey Tigers would have hoped to conclude the first half of their season on a positive note, but were unable to do so as they went down 29-14 against UWC.

“It’s very disappointing to finish off before the mid-season break like this, but we know this half of the season was very challenging. To perspective on our injury situation, only five out of the twenty-two players in our match day squad had played in the promotion/relegation match against UWC last month,” Esterhuizen said.

“We completely dominated the first twenty-five minutes, but we only scored seven points during this time. UWC slowly grew into the game, and it must be said that they were a much improved defensive said compared to the one we faced last time out. I could see they really wanted the win,” he said.

The midseason break arrives at a welcomed time, as many players will be back from injury by the time the next round of fixtures begins. One of these players is Guy Alexander, who captained the side during their 2016 Varsity Cup campaign but has since missed out due to injury.

Heading into the second half of the season, coach Esterhuizen has said that the aim will be claiming 35 points from their remaining seven matches. “The UWC match is now behind us and all the thinking is only positive from here onwards,” he stated.

This brings an end to the first seven fixtures of the season, and we would like to wish all our players the very best for their upcoming examination period, as well as a safe and relaxing holiday. The FNB Ikey Tigers will return to action on Saturday, the 23rd of July.
