Ikeys dominate on the Mile
On an incredibly special night for the club, wing Ntokozo Makhaza was the star of the show as the Ikey Tigers notched up an impressive 40-19 victory over defending champions Tuks on the Green Mile.
In front of a full house, the boys in blue and white bounced back from last week’s heart breaking last minute loss to Maties in style! For the visitors, it will be back to the drawing board after last week’s one-point defeat to Shimlas in Pretoria.
It took 12 minutes for the Ikeys to break the deadlock when hooker Alex Castle – tucked nicely into the boot of a juggernaut maul from the pack – went over for a five pointer. Ten minutes later 8th man Jason “Fanta” MacLeod Smith got over the line, and with Makhaza adding the extras, the home side took firm control of this fixture.
With the traditional Green Mile hurricane at their backs, UCT ran riot as the half time hooter loomed, adding two more tries. The Ikeys went into the sheds 29-0 up!
With the wind at their backs in the second half, Tuks staged somewhat of a comeback as they caught UCT napping. Centre Lincoln Daniels was rewarded with two tries, while Pierre Fourie picked up a third.
It was the home side however who had the last say, with the effervescent Makhaza snatching his second try of the match to secure a memorable 40-19 victory.
