Ikeys dominate away at Florida Park
Tygerberg 13:36 UCT
UCT added to the struggeling Tygerberg outfit’s worries by putting on a solid performance for a 5 pointer at this difficult away venue, outplaying the home side by five tries to one.
It was a great day for rugby and the Ikeys had a strong outing, with a clinical performance, coming off an extremely tough week with great contests vs SK Walmers last week Friday and Victorians on Wednesday night. UCT were warned, as Tygerberg had a reinforced side including several Irish and English players and are fighting relegation, desperate for points.
The game started as was to be expected, with Tygerberg coming out firing with a strong wind in their backs and putting the first 3 points on the board. UCT came close, but it was Tygerberg who intercepted a flat pass to go 10:0 ahead with not even ten minutes on the clock. Then the Ikeys started taking over.
Danie van der Merwe scored first for the visitors, after his forwards had paved the way and set up a ruck mid-goal 10 meters out. The UCT scrummy beat the defenders close to the ruck and found a gap to dart through and score untouched – he also converted his try. UCT now started dominating all facets of the game, putting on major pressure in the lineouts where the hosts only won a handfull of scrappy ball. The forwards also dominated the scrum, where tighthead prop Ian Matthews, back from a stint in France made a great impact.
The next try came after an excellent run from center Dave Edgar who in his unique style straightened the attack brilliantly, played a perfectly timed pass to James Martin who raced down the touchline to score in the corner.
UCT scored again before halftime through flank Mpho Mbiyozo who showed great strength and some SA 7s style determination to score from 20 meters out, pulling three defenders over the tryline with him, and making it 22:10.
The second half the Ikeys had the wind in their backs and kept Tygerberg on the backfoot. UCT dominated more and more and a 5m scrum, had to be reset a couple of times, with the defending Tygerberg pack eventually penalised repeatedly for collapsing. UCT called the scrum again keeping up the pressure and were duly awarded a penalty try.
The final try of the match also came after excellent pressure in a scrum 10m outside the hosts try area, where a kick could be charged down and Pieter Engelbrecht was quicker than the cover to gather and score despite two defenders’ attention.
The entire team deserves a mention for their great effort, but as has become tradition, there were some awards for the best of the day.
The ‘Tim Lane Big Hit Award’ was shared between flank Kyle Brown and inside center Pieter Engelbrecht who both put in a crunshing tackle. The “most accurate player” was Dave Edgar who had an excellent game and literally didn’t put a foot wrong. The player with the highest work rate was Impi Mbyozo and the most impact off the bench was made by young Kyle Brown. UCT’s man of the match was big lock, Bodo Sieber, who was spot on in the line-outs, showed great work rate and added some strong runs to his game.
Next Saturday the Ikeys are up against Helderberg (the previous match was won 41:33), this time on the Green Mile, so we hope many of you will come out and support the UCT teams.
