The UCT 1st XV made the long trip away to Brackenfell in their first friendly for the upcoming season. With the 1stXV competing in the Varsity Cup, the fringe players were put to the test and showing off the depth within the UCT Rugby Club structures.
The game started off as a dull affair with a lacklustre opening few minutes. The first points of the game came through two penalty exchanges and then a well worked opening try to put the host 10-3 ahead. The Ikeys then responded with a try of their own through hooker Michael Kennedy, converted by Thomas Bednall. Minutes before half time outside centre Paul Hendry was sinned binned with what was deemed to be some foul play by the linesman. The boys went into half time 13-10 behind.
The second half was then a completely different ball game as the Ikeys showed much more intensity and a greater fitness level compared to that of the host. The boys ran in 5 unanswered tries in the second half through Paul Cohen, Ryan Germishuys, Sean Johnstone, Arno Raath and a last minute try by winger Nathan Nel. Thomas Bednall converting 5 of the 6 tries scored in the game and two penalties ending the game off with a convincing 46-16 victory in their opening friendly fixture.
Ikeys next friendly fixture will be away to False Bay on the 08 March 2014.
