Tonight, the Varsity Cup heads into the first round of knockouts, with the Ikey Tigers taking on Shimlas in Bloemfontein, in their semi-final encounter.
The Ikeys line-up for the match remains the same as the team which took on UJ last week, with one exception: UCT’s Warren Seal makes his way into the starting line-up in place of Thomas Bednall.
Ikey’s coach Kevin Musikanth expressed the team’s excitement going into the match saying: “We are looking forward to our rematch against Shimlas in Bloem. It was our most disappointment pool match so we are fortunate to get another crack at the only unbeaten team.”
The last time the two teams met, the men from the Cape lost out 24-44 in Bloemfontein. As such, UCT will be looking to improve on their previous performance, and make their way into the Finals.
Ikey Richard Stewart also cited enthusiasm for the semi, saying, “The team is excited to get up to Bloem and make right our performance against Shimlas, to do justice to our journey in the campaign.”
What’s more, he went on, “It is going to be an exciting match as I believe both sides play a beautiful brand of rugby and the knockouts always up the intensity and passion on show.”
Given UCT’s narrow 8-0 victory over UJ resulting in their semi-final spot, the team are well-versed in high-intensity encounter. As the full back said following the Round Seven match, “it is good to be in these tight pressure situations, especially going into knock out footy.”
The coach finished off by noting that “with it being a semi final, this means that only one team progresses to Final, so we have to leave it all out on the park. It’s going to be an exciting fixture!”
The Ikey Tigers vs Shimlas game will kick off at 16:45 tonight, and will be broadcast on supersport. If you're in Cape Town, head down to the Slug and Lettuce in Newlands – the official Ikey Tigers Fan Park for the match.
