Ikeys blitz Hammies
UCT pulled off a tremendous victory against powerhouse club Hamilton's at the Green Mile, beating the visitors 25:12.
The UCT U20 Trojans and Eagles set the tone for the night beating their counterparts from Green Point.
The Ikey Tigers had a great night in tough conditions on the wet and slippery Green Mile and could not put a foot wrong going up 19:0 following tries by Mike Kennedy, Luke Bax, Dylan Sage in the first 15 minutes.
UCT continued to do most of the playing, using the wind and conditions well and added penalties to edge ahead further leading their stunned visitors 22:0 at the half.
As so often at UCT the conditions created a game of two halves, but UCT kept running the ball playing into the wind now and thoroughly enjoyed their night of rugby, adding another Ross Jones Davies penalty to make it 25:0.
WP scrumhalf Nic Groom and center Damian de Allende were in attendance and commented: "It really was champagne rugby out there – great to come watch the Ikeys boys."
What followed was a gutsy effort to stop the wounded beast that was Hammies, as the Green Point outfit started clawing their way back into the game with a first try with about 20 minutes to go – 25:7.
Hammies to their credit finished strong and added another try for the final score of 25:12 to end a fantastic Cape derby match.
"I thought it was a superb performance and a fantastic defensive effort in particular." said a happy Director of Rugby Kevin Musikanth.
Credit to coach JJ Gagiano for this great win and the brilliant turn around following the narrow loss to Vics just 5 days prior.
Up next UCT face Helderberg also at home.
