Ikeys beat Vics at Craven stadium

UCT beat Victorians by 16:3 in a muddy arm wrestle at Danie Craven stadium in Stellenbosch on Saturday.

The rain stopped before the match, but the mud stayed on the heavy Coetzenberg fields and it was hard going for both teams who are known to favour a more expansive game.

It was up to the boot of in-form Ross Jones Davies to secure the lead and the Ikeys stayed ahead thanks to thei superior tactical play and more physical forward pack.

The UCT forwards paved the way lead by evergreen captain Levi Odendaal and hard running Chris Heiberg, but it was a phenomenal bit of play by wing come center Nathan Nel that saw the UCT side put the result beyond doubt, when the speedster crossed the whitewash in the second half. Jones-Davies added the extras to make it 16:3 and put the game beyond reach of the Stellenbosch students.

The U20 Trojans also did well in a tight game and beat Vics 17:14, with the latter scoring with the hooter after the UCT young guns had been up 17:7 following a try by replacement scrumhalf Ryan Dugmore.

Up next are the Victorians' big brothers Maties who edged Hamiltons by 18:15 and beat the struggling Villagers 27:19 in their recent fixtures to stay in touch with log leading Durbell.

The Maties game played at UCT on Saturday the 1st of September doubles as Intervarsity and will be the long awaited full multi sport revival of the great contests.
